You can get a free blood pressure check at Mega Health Rx, 64-51 108th Street in Forest Hills, any time we are open — no appointment and no purchase needed. A pharmacist will take your reading and explain what it means.
What your numbers mean
A reading has two numbers: systolic (the top number, pressure when your heart beats) and diastolic (the bottom number, pressure between beats). The American Heart Association categories for adults are:
| Category | Top number | Bottom number | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Less than 120 | and | Less than 80 |
| Elevated | 120–129 | and | Less than 80 |
| High (stage 1) | 130–139 | or | 80–89 |
| High (stage 2) | 140 or higher | or | 90 or higher |
| Severe — contact a doctor now | Higher than 180 | and/or | Higher than 120 |
One high reading does not mean you have high blood pressure. Your doctor looks at several readings over time.
How to get an accurate reading
- Avoid caffeine, smoking and exercise for 30 minutes before.
- Sit quietly for 5 minutes, back supported, feet flat on the floor.
- Rest your arm at heart level and don’t talk during the reading.
- Use the correct cuff size — a cuff that is too small reads high.
When to call a doctor
If your reading is higher than 180/120 and you have chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness or weakness, vision changes or difficulty speaking, call 911. If your readings are regularly 130/80 or higher, make an appointment with your doctor.
Home monitors
Home monitoring is one of the best ways to track your blood pressure. Ask us about choosing an upper-arm monitor and cuff size, and bring yours in if you want help using it correctly. Some insurance plans and OTC benefit cards cover a home monitor — ask us.
Already on blood pressure medication?
Ask for a medication review. We can check for interactions, side effects, and over-the-counter products (like some decongestants and pain relievers) that can raise blood pressure.
