What shingles is
Shingles is a painful, blistering rash caused by the same virus as chickenpox. After chickenpox, the virus stays in the body and can reactivate years later. About 1 in 3 people in the U.S. will get shingles in their lifetime, and the risk rises with age. Some people develop long-lasting nerve pain after the rash, called postherpetic neuralgia.
Who should get Shingrix
- All adults 50 and older, according to the CDC
- Adults 19 and older who have, or will have, a weakened immune system
- People who had shingles before — the vaccine can help prevent it coming back
- People who received the older Zostavax vaccine
- People who are not sure whether they had chickenpox
Two doses: the schedule
Shingrix is given as two doses. The second dose is given 2 to 6 months after the first for most people (1 to 2 months for some people with weakened immune systems). If more than 6 months have passed, you don’t need to start over — just get the second dose. We can remind you when it is due.
How well it works
According to the CDC, two doses are more than 90% effective at preventing shingles and postherpetic neuralgia in adults 50 and older with healthy immune systems, and protection stays strong for years.
Side effects
Shingrix commonly causes a sore arm, and some people feel tired, achy, feverish or have a headache for a day or two. These reactions are a sign the immune system is responding. Many people plan their dose before a quiet day.
Does Medicare cover the shingles vaccine?
Shingrix is covered under Medicare Part D, and since 2023 recommended adult vaccines covered by Part D have no out-of-pocket cost. Most commercial plans also cover it with no copay. Medicaid covers it too. Bring your card and we will check your coverage before you get the shot.
