What RSV is
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) usually causes cold-like symptoms, but in older adults and people with certain health conditions it can lead to pneumonia, hospitalization and worsening of heart and lung disease.
Who should get the RSV vaccine
According to the CDC:
- Everyone 75 and older should get one dose.
- Adults 50 to 74 at increased risk should get one dose. Risk factors include chronic heart or lung disease (such as COPD, asthma or heart failure), diabetes with complications, chronic kidney or liver disease, a weakened immune system, severe obesity, and living in a nursing home.
Pregnant people have separate RSV guidance to protect newborns; ask your obstetrician.
Is it a yearly vaccine?
No. The RSV vaccine is currently a one-time dose. If you already got one, including last season, you don’t need another right now.
When to get it
The best time is late summer or early fall, before RSV season, but you can get it any time of year. It can be given at the same visit as your flu and COVID-19 vaccines.
Which vaccine?
There are three FDA-licensed RSV vaccines for older adults: Arexvy (GSK), Abrysvo (Pfizer) and mResvia (Moderna). All are given as a single shot. Our pharmacist will tell you which one we have available.
Side effects
Common side effects are a sore arm, tiredness, headache and muscle aches, usually lasting a day or two.
Cost and coverage
RSV vaccines for adults are covered under Medicare Part D with no out-of-pocket cost when recommended, and are covered by most commercial and Medicaid plans. We check your coverage before giving the shot.
