Who needs Tdap
- Adults who never had Tdap — one dose, at any time.
- Everyone, every 10 years — a Td or Tdap booster.
- Pregnant people — one dose during each pregnancy, ideally early in the third trimester, to pass protection to the baby. Talk with your obstetrician about timing.
- Grandparents, parents and caregivers of newborns — whooping cough is most dangerous for babies too young to be fully vaccinated. Make sure you are up to date before the baby arrives.
- After some wounds — a deep or dirty wound may need a tetanus booster if it has been more than 5 years. For a serious injury, see a doctor or urgent care.
Why whooping cough is still a concern
Whooping cough cases have risen in recent years in the U.S. It spreads easily and can cause weeks of severe coughing in adults, and life-threatening illness in infants.
Side effects
A sore, red or swollen arm is common. Some people feel tired or have a headache or mild fever.
