How to transfer a prescription from Walgreens: the short version
You do not need to call Walgreens, visit the store or use the Walgreens app. Pharmacies are allowed to transfer prescriptions directly to each other, so the new pharmacy does the work. Fill out our transfer form, and a Mega Health Rx pharmacist takes it from there.
Step by step
- Tell us which Walgreens you use. For example, “Walgreens on Queens Boulevard in Forest Hills” or “Walgreens on 63rd Drive in Rego Park.” Any Walgreens or Duane Reade in the country works.
- List your medications. Names are enough. A photo of your pill bottles helps, because your Walgreens history does not move over on its own.
- We call Walgreens. Their pharmacist sends us each prescription that still has refills. You don’t need to be on the phone.
- We contact your doctor if needed. If a prescription is out of refills, we ask your doctor’s office for a renewal.
- We confirm, then fill. One short call to check your list and insurance, then pick up at 64-51 108th Street or get free delivery anywhere in NYC.
How long does a Walgreens transfer take?
Most transfers are done the same day. It takes longer when a prescription has no refills left and we have to reach your doctor, or when Walgreens is slow to answer the phone. We keep you posted either way, and if you are almost out, tell us and we will put that medication first.
Transferring from Duane Reade
Duane Reade is owned by Walgreens, so the steps are identical. Tell us which Duane Reade you use — many of our Rego Park patients come from the store on 63rd Drive — and we handle the call.
Will my insurance work after I leave Walgreens?
Most likely, yes. Your coverage comes from your insurance plan, not from Walgreens. We accept most commercial plans, including CVS Caremark, Express Scripts and OptumRx, plus most Medicare Part D and Medicaid plans. Can controlled medications be transferred from Walgreens?
Some can be transferred once; some cannot be transferred at all under federal and New York rules. For those, your doctor can send a new prescription straight to us. Call with the medication name and we will tell you what is possible.
